The quality of hotels in Iraq is not very high standard. Most of the hotels in Karbala, Najaf and other cities are poorly equipped and do not have English style bathrooms in all the rooms, so if you are disabled please make sure you carry (with you) a portable toilet. Hotels in Iraq typically charge per person and not per room.

The lobby is large, staff is very profesional and this hotel caters to western tour groups and operators. The rates are almost half of Zam Zam hotel, which is a good 10 minute walk from the shrine.

Qasr Al Arab Hotel & Restaurant, Najaf, Iraq (on the side of Imam Ali's Shrine)

This is a 2 star hotel with a banquet hall, a mall on the lower level that sells various utensils, candies, snacks, drinks etc. Rooms are decent and it is walking distance from the shrine. The staff was courtous and very professional.

Zam Zam Hotel, Najaf, Iraq

This is a popular hotel and can be considered a 2 star hotel. Only a few rooms have attached English style bathrooms, although they have added a few more wings with more. This hotel caters to mostly western clientele and those that prefer better amenities. Hotel provides a meal plan, where you can include breakfast, lunch and dinner in your room rate for a reasonable fee. This a great option for those that don't want to risk eating food at the local restaurants that may not have the most hygienic options.

The room rates vary from $50 to $120 per person per night, depending on time of year you visit.

There are other hotels near by that cost half of this and provide western style toilets and decent rooms. Zam Zam has great customer service, buffet style food and a large lobby.
